Club President Bob Smith was a competitor in the Masters Men 50 team and his report on the NZ Road Relays event is below
Saturday October 4TH was a momentous day for the Pakuranga Athletic Club. On that day we came of age! What your club did in the serene Otago countryside was issue a clear and concise statement to New Zealand’s athletic community.
I am very proud of everyone who had a part to play in this success. The drama that unfolded on Saturday is the result of the commitment and dedication of those athletes who took on the demanding course. The involvement of our club goes well beyond the individuals who travelled to the most geographically distant New Zealand Road Relay event. It extends to everyone who assisted in fund raising and organising the event. From the extremely hard work from Brian Payne and Richard Thomson assisted by the other members of the Cross Country and Road Committee, to Bruce and Tracy Calway who fronted up at the airport on Friday morning to ensure all athletes had a track suit. Through the imagination and guidance of Jenny and Dave Drummond who meticulously plan every aspect of the weekend. Then through to club members who donated either time or money to help it all happen.
If the health of this section of an Athletic club is measured by any event this must be the one. These results prove we are competitive nationally in both the senior and junior grades. The results prove we can fundraise, plan, select, manage and compete at the highest level a long way from our clubhouse. That must be the clearest indication that we can be healthy into the future.
Next season the New Zealand Road Relay event will be held over the iconic Banks Peninsular course. 2009 would be (I think) the 70TH running of this event which was first run in 1935 with a break taken during World War 2. Our Senior Women have proved that the momentum gained last year in Timaru can be sustained and have successfully defended their title. Can our Senior Men and Junior teams build on their success? Can our Masters Women team improve on their bronze medal and can we get two Masters teams in the medals?
I personally believe all of these goals are achievable. This success will not be easy to achieve the athletes will have to train hard but that will not be enough. We will all need to work hard as a club to achieve these goals maybe harder than we did in 2008. We will need willing members to join the Cross Country and Road Committee and direct the effort, set in place the vision and set the goals.
It will not stop there you can only bask in glory for a short time before you start planning your next success. In 2010 or 2011 Pakuranga will be the host of the New Zealand Road Relay Championships on our own course here in Auckland. Imagine what that medal ceremony will be like and you can all be there to witness our success!
Bob Smith

From the Athletics New Zealand Media Release - 22 September 2008
Pakuranga combined well to win the Auckland senior men's road relay title on a circuit surrounding Lloyd Elsmore Park on Saturday.
The team led out by Jonny McKee and anchored by Nick Pannett, fresh from his half marathon win in the morning, recorded a total time of 1h 57m for the 34.9km.
Wesley were some five minutes back in second with Auckland City Athletic third.
National women's relay champions Pakuranga won the Auckland women's title running 1h 40m 46s for the 26.2km, six minutes ahead of their B team.
Jonny McKee ran the fastest 4400m leg with 13m 56s, Chanel Williamson was the fastest woman with 16m 13s. In the 8700m leg Paul Crowhurst was the fastest with 28m 31s and Lisa Robertson was around in 32m 12s.
WAITAKERE
Scott Winton won the inaugural Lydiard Legend marathon on Saturday around the world famous Waitakere Ranges used by Arthur Lydiard for endurance training in the late 1950's and 1960's.
Winton and Ben Ruthe matched strides for the first 5km, but once on to the uphill to the Scenic Drive Winton moved into another gear and soon established a commanding lead. Winton went on to record an outstanding time of 2h 24m 23s for the tough course and to collect a cheque for $5000. Ruthe settled back to run, what he described at the finish as a solid training run, for second and $2000 in 2h 38m 58s with Grant Schofield taking third and $1000 in 2h 44m 31s.
Winton aged 33 said that he was surprised as to how fast he had run.
"I'm very happy with the time. I was not sure of the shape of I was in as it was my first race since the Hamburg marathon in April, but I am surprised by that time," he said.
Ruthe, who had played a series of touch rugby games that night before said that it was good to finish.
"It was a beautiful course and I went out with Scott to see how I felt, I haven't done the training for this race, so it became a solid training run," said Ruthe.
Lara Phillips (22) won the women's marathon in 2h 54m 13s from Melanie Burke 2h 59m 0s and Lesley Turner Hall 3h 11m 32s. Barry Magee, 1960 Rome Olympic Games marathon bronze medallist, collected the trifecta as coach of these three athletes.
An emotional Phillips said that the win certainly meant a lot to her in honour of Arthur Lydiard and to all the runners who have trained around the course. Phillips also took home a purse of $5000.
Magee, who did his long distance training under Lydiard around the Waitakere Ranges, said that it was great honour to establish a marathon in memory of the world famous coach.
"Arthur used to tell us that the long run was the most important run of the week and the least important was speed work. If you don't have endurance you don't have speed. The course used today has developed champions from 800m up to the marathon," said Magee.
Nick Pannett won the associated Arthur's half marathon in 1h 19m 42s with Maria Akesson the women's in 1h 28m 45s both winning $1500.

Marathon turns 100!

To all you Marathon runners out there, and lesser mortals, July 24th marks an important anniversary. This was the day, 100 years ago, that Dorando Pietri staggered round the track to be first across the line in the 1908 London Olympic Marathon; only to be DQ’d soon afterwards for receiving assistance. Of more importance, July 24th 2008 is the 100th Anniversary of the official Marathon distance.
To appreciate the significance of this date, needs a little ‘history’.

What are the origins of the Marathon; and how was its distance established?

The ‘Marathon’ was adopted for the first modern Olympic Games at Athens, in 1896. It was based on the mythical tale of a Greek messenger who, in 490BC, is supposed to have run from Marathon to Athens to bring news of a crucial Greek victory over the invading Persians. After the battle, in which he may have taken part, he was dispatched to Athens to deliver the news: "Rejoice, we conquer". Whereupon, he collapsed and died. This is the legend. It is actually a melding of several stories. (The Marathon messenger was Thersippos and he did not drop dead – but why spoil a good story?!)
The distance was approximately 40 km, the distance from Marathon to Athens by the longer, flatter route.
The length of a Marathon was not fixed at first, since the only important factor was that all athletes competed on the same course. The distance varied depending on the route established for each venue. For the first seven Olympic Games, there were six different marathon distances of approx 40km or 25 miles.
The 1908 Olympic Games were allocated to Rome. Yes, that’s right: ROME! The Italian authorities were preparing to hold the games when Mount Vesuvius erupted on April 07, 1906, devastating the city of Naples. Funds were diverted to the reconstruction of Naples, so a new venue was required. London was selected, and the games were held in White City.
The White City Stadium, which was built at short notice for the games, (no Resource Consent needed!) held 68,000 and was considered by some a technological marvel.
The Marathon at the 1908 Olympics in London was organised by the Polytechnic Harriers, the premier Harrier Club in London. The event was given a Royal theme, with the course set to start from the East Lawn at Windsor Castle; and to finish in front of the Royal Box at the stadium. This distance was measured as 26 miles 385 yards. (42.195 km)
The specific Marathon distance determined so haphazardly for London was eventually adopted as the official length of a Marathon, but not until many years later.

Thanks to David hamilton for this information.

The Boys A team were also 1st and the B team 2nd. Our boys teams placed 2nd and 3rd on estimated times. Pakuranga won the Hanson Shield by a big margin and were a close 2nd in the Turnco Shield. Pakuranga Juniors had a top day at the Southland Centennial Cross Country Relay held at Mt Roskill War Memorial Park on Saturday. The A Team got off to a flying start with Fabian Castle running the fastest Junior lap of the day and giving the team a big lead. Lachlan McNie, Kelsey Wayne and Joachim Noble kept the team in front for a well deserved victory. The B Team of David Lee, Peter Wheeler, Chloe Higson and James Calway were only 50 seconds behind the A Team for an impressive 3RD place. The C Team of Douglas McMaster, Samir Brown, Courtney Hendricksen and Alexander Lloyd showed the clubs strength when they finished 5TH. Our teams should place well in the estimated time section when results are available.
Junior runners also had success in the Open Relay events. Alex Parlane ran the first lap for the winning Men’s A team and Ben Barry and Michael Whitehead were members of the Men’s B team that finished 2ND.
