The Athletics Auckland Centre has the following invitation Next Monday night for anyone interested
SPECIAL MEETING – MONDAY 17 NOVEMBER
The Cross Country and Road Section of Athletics Auckland warmly invites athletes, club officials, coaches
and parents of juniors to a Special Meeting on Monday 17 November at 7.30pm
in the Officials Lounge at Mt Smart Stadium (the building on the left hand side overlooking the Track).
Entry is off O’Rorke Road.
This meeting is called to give everyone an opportunity to give us their views, and listen to others’ views, on the following areas of our sport that we would like some feedback on before preparing the programme for the 2009 season.
1. GRAND PRIX SERIES
- is it achieving what we all want it to?
- do we need prizes?
- are there other things we can do to beef up the series?
2. SELECTION PROCESS FOR AAI XCR TEAMS
The current policy is attached to this e-mail and we welcome any discussion on the policy we adopt for 2009.
The XCR selectors will be on hand to answer any questions.
3. PROMOTION OF CLUBS AT THE START OF THE SEASON
It has been proposed that clubs hold a common event on the opening day for each club in 2009,
to help promote our sport, and share the costs of advertising this.
- is this feasible
- is it an idea that Clubs would like to pursue
4. ANY OTHER ISSUES
The Cross Country and Road Committee will take into consideration any suggestions or comments made
at this meeting when planning the 2009 season.
This is your chance to try and ensure that this committee has input from a wide cross-section of interested persons
so please come and join us. Tea and coffee will be served.
And Finally Debbie Garlands daughter Mikaela will be at the club on Saturday promoting Cookie Time Christmas
cookies and taking orders- a good buy at $14 a bucket of 85 delivery before Xmas
and thats it for this week
Cheers
Richard

For those of you left in Auckland and coming to the club on Saturday, there will be a pack run
starting about 2 pm.
Last Saturday the Mystery was revealed with a Reverse Pairs Event held
using the 4.5 k course used for the half marathon and Auckland Road relays.
Everyone was ranked on their handicap and the Pairs selected -18 in all.
My apologies to Sunnette for not including her in the starting list.
Ann Bradbury and John Baty were first to finish just ahead of Alan Bradbury and Karl Sutton
with Debbie garland and Bruce Calway a close third.
Was a shame that Sian Morrice didn't wait for her partner Jackie Russell or they may have been
in the leading group too. The leading time was approximately 21:40.
Correcting Sunnette and Kens time for their handicap they would have finished 8th.
There was some positive feedback about this type of event, any suggestions on whether or not the
2009 committee should develop this type of event would be appreciated.
Should the pairs be selected as they were last Saturday or should it be more competitive
with members selecting their own partner and having a sealed handicap as well.
Should the senior section target/encourage the Auckland City pairs at Cornwall park in May.
Saturday October 11th 2 pm Sponsors Day
3:45pm AGM for Senior Cross Country and Road Section
& Special Trophies handed out
Nominations for the 2009 committee will be taken from the floor on the day
All trophies that were competed for this year have been engraved and will be
handed out to those of you who attend. Also certificates.
2pm Sponsors Day - don't forget to support our sponsors
This will be a teams handicap on the short road course similar to last year.
Saturday 18th October Sir Barry Curtis Preparation Day
Sunday 19th October Sir Barry Curtis 10 km Road Race
Bruce Calway is looking for volunteers to help with this major fundraising event
please put your name forward if you are available
and haven't already done so
Sunday November 2 Auckland Marathon and Half (includes Auckland Marathon Champs )
note entries closed - so try Keri Keri instead if you missed entering
Saturday November 15 Keri Keri Half Marathon - NZ Half Marathon Champs
Monday night 5k at 6 from the club - great course and now held completly in daylight for runners
and walkers, for young and old.
Great to catch up on some speed work.

Matt Sweetingham (16:01) being first woman and man home respectively.
Rachael Martin (31:40) was first walker.

Good Evening Everyone
Fifty Two runners and walkers crossed the finish line in this years Road Championships at the club on Saturday.
Overhead conditions had some cloud cover although it was warm and the steady wind really meant a tail wind
out and head wind home.
First to finish, by a margin of 10 seconds, was Nick Pannett who covered the 10.1 long course in 31:59,
with Kristine Reid second to finish in 32:09 for the 8.3 k short course.
Both of these times were faster than the fastest mens and womens times at the club champs on these courses
last year.
Fastest Masters Man on the long course was John Reid with 39:11 which also bettered last years best time.
Of the over 60s Masters Men John Robinson produced the fastest time in 34:56, slightly slower than last year.
The womans handicap cup was won by Gaye Stratton (58:23) with Sunnette Kennard (58:44) runnerup
(well walkerup I guess) and Julie Devonshire (59:25) third.
The mens handicap cup was won by Maurie Neighbour (58:01) with Greg Dodds (58:19) runnerup
and Lachlan Maclean (58:29) third.
Sixteen members did better than their handicap.
Closest to their handicap was Malcolm Chamberlin, who was 1 second too fast in 59:59.
For closeness there were 5 members between Dave Spankie on 1:00:07 and Sian Morrice on 1:00:13,
thats seven finishers in seven seconds - how good would that have looked on a normal handicap day?!
Championship Age Grade Winners were
Senior Women Sarah Devoy 32:54
Women 30 Leah Hirschfeld 34:52
Masters Women 35 Kristine Reid 32:09
Masters Women 40 Melanie Cossar 34:58
Masters Women 50 Gaye Stratton 45:53
Masters Women 55 Beverley Lorimer 52:06
Walkers Women Sunnette Kennard 1:00:44
Walkers Men Les Heywood 54:58

Masters Men 40 Lachlan Maclean 53:14
Masters Men 45 Chris Keith 41:46
Masters Men 50 John Reid 39:11
Masters Men 55 John Baty 47:57

The Mens Trophy was won by our John Reid (39:11) in the M50 grade with Malcolm Chamberlin
(40:14) runner up. Richard Thomson (53:09) was the fastest in the M55 grade (well had to be as

course to win the M65 grade (again the only runner).
Marcia Soanes (48:22) won the Womans Trophy competing in the W50 grade.

This after winning in Roverto,Italy on Wednesday with a 19.73 throw.

On Saturday night a good number of club members returned to the club for a delicious Pot Luck Dinner.
Thanks to Brian for organising this social occasion.
The dinner was followed by a great hours entertainment with Bobs bottle auction, with some great buys
made and some not so great buys made! Thanks to auctioneer Bob for a great job and thanks to
everyone for entering into the spirit of the event and donating and buying the bottles, not one was
passed in (although the last one should have been). Just over $500 was raised by the auction to
help fund the teams going to the national road relays in Dunedin.
The raffle for the All Black Rugby Book was drawn after the auction and was won by number 3
which was purchased by Barry Weston.
Unfortunately we were unable to establish television contact with Brisbane so its was off to various
other venues to watch a great game of rugby. The All Blacks winning 28-24. If you think that the
score on your ticket was close to that score, let Brian know - email brian.payne@manukau.ac.nz
or see him on Saturday.
Thanks once again to everyone who came.
Well thats all for now - an events coming up email will follow later in the week

The Senior Cross Country and Road section is looking at the possibility of hosting the NZ Road Relays
some time in the near future. To do this, a competitive and interesting course and the associated
infrastructure will need to be established.
It is anticipated that the Auckland Road Relays in 2009 (or 2010) will be used as the "test relay" for this.
The committee is looking for someone to head an organising sub committee and members to
be on this sub committee.
If you are interested in either please contact Brian Payne ASAP.
And from Alec Day - another marathon adventure
A recent marathon snapshot:
Hutt 5 Bridges Marathon – Sunday 17th August 2008
This was inaugural presentation of the event, and attracted a small field in the marathon, with larger fields in the half and 10 and 5km events. Fortunately for the participants, the weather was fine throughout, albeit rather cold at times.
Basically an off-road run on an out and back course, which commenced in Lower Hutt outside the Town Hall. The route almost immediately crossed to the Hutt River stop bank, continued down river to the Estuary Bridge at Petone, which was crossed and then progressed north along the true right bank of the river as far as the Melling Bridge - opposite Lower Hutt. It then wound its way through the tracks and parks on the true left of the river as far north as Moonshine – north of Silverstream, where its turned and retraced its steps [ as it were] back along the same route, to finish outside the Town Hall. The course covers about half of the well known Hutt River Trail – the majority of which is the course in the marathon event of that title, held in January each year. The course encompasses a wide variety surfaces - river stop banks, gravel roads, walking tracks, mud, grassed parks, across a golf course, road bridges etc. Basically flat, there were sufficient undulations throughout to vary the pace. The general view of finishers was that it was an interesting course and a well organized event, which they would like to run again sometime. The organization of the event went very smoothly – particularly given that this was the first marathon presentation by the organizer – whose experience was mainly with multi-sport events.

Good Evening All
This is a follow up email about Pakurangas involvement in the NZ Road Relays in Dunedin in October.
Thanks you to those members who have replied to the first email last month giving details of the
committees decision to send five Senior and Masters teams to the realys.
Initial replies were required by last Sunday, with those confirming their availabliity required to pay a deposit,
With those of you who have so far made themselves available, we are confirming that we intend to send
Masters Women and Masters Men 50 teams to the relays.
As yet we do not have enough either Senior Women or Senior Men available to make up even one team
of either of these grades -
so we may only send 3 teams with the third being a composite team.
We will however give an extension of time for the confirmation of availabilty
to those who have not yet replied.
If you are interested in participating in this geat event please forward your name and $150 deposit
to me per the attached letter - or give to your selector or me at the club on this or next Saturday
FINAL CUTOFF WILL BE 30th JULY
at which time the decision on the teams will be made.
Athletics New Zealand has now updated its website with more details on the relays
and a map and details of the course. Here is the link to the website
http://www.athletics.org.nz/article.aspx?ID=1936&Mode=1
Thanks once again to those of you who have responded to our request on availability
If you have not responded - there is still time - PLEASE let us know one way or the other by July 30th

Good Evening Everyone
Yesterday the Senior Club Cross Country Champs were held at the club with 46 club members
Splishing, Splashing and Sploshing around a wet course at the club. The rain held off until after
the start and slowly got heavier so that by the time members were on the second lap the
ground conditions were very wet, great for the ducks and the seagulls but not for us.
Rachel Penny and Kristine Reid were first to finish, both recording 23:36 for the 5,500 metre
"short course', Rachel taking out the Senior Womens grade and Kristine the Masters Women 35.
The Masters Women field averaged about a minute slower than the previous run, giving some idea
of what the conditions did to times, the longer runs times were affected proportionately.
David Drummond was first over the 2 lap 8,200 metre course and winning the Masters Men 40 in 31:53.
Nick Pannett won the Senior Men grade over 9,600 metres in 36:21 and John Robinson was first
Masters Man 60 and over to finish the 5,500 metre course in 24:39.
The first Woman to finish on handicap was Christine Burns on 49:40, the only member to finish under
their handicap. Chris Martin on 50:21 was the first man on handicap.
Age Grade winners were
Senior Women Rachel Penny 23:36
Pre Masters Women Leah Hirschfeld 26:00
Masters Women 35 Kristine Reid 23:36
Masters Women 40 Melanie Cossar 24:16
Masters Women 45 Sandra Patterson 25:43
Masters Women 50 Gaye Stratton 34:17
Masters Women 55 Bev Loriner 36:41
Senior Men Nick Pannett 36:21
Masters Men 35 Brett Wallwork 35:17
Masters Men 40 David Drummong 31:53
