7 - 14 yrs --- IMPROVING SKILLS [Open | Close]

The aim is to have fun and learn new skills with a focus on achieving personal bests.

This will not only make you a better athlete, but will assist your ability in other sports by helping you fun faster, jump higher and throw further.

The 7-14 year olds begin their club night straight after the Under 6 years age group on a Wednesday night at 5:45pm.

Athletes line up in the designated area and sign in with their Grade Manager, who takes the age group through the events following a two week program covering:

60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m

Long jump, High jump

Shot put, Discus

Points are awarded for attendance, achieving personal bests and place getters in each event.

These points are totalled at the end of the season for the prize giving night where a number of awards and trophies are available.

Regular events and open days are held around Auckland where athletes can compete for ribbons or medals.

Athletes can also choose to attend the major events such as the Colgate Games, or they may be selected for club or inter provincial teams.

We are lucky to have access to expert coaching for athletes who wish to further their skills.

Training sessions are available to anyone interested on Monday and Thursday evenings.

See the 'Coaching' link on the left for more details.

Parents are urged to become involved with the running of the club night to help things run smoothly.

Whether this is by helping an age group at an event, measuring throws or time keeping.

No prior experience is required.

5 - 6YRS --- LEARNING THE BASICS [Open | Close]

PAKURANGA ATHLETIC CLUB
5 - 6yrs --- Learning the basics

To help your child gain the confidence needed to feel comfortable on the track and field, here is a list of guidelines to follow for each club night and to teach your child at home. Your little athlete will pick up these simple techniques and become comfortable and confident to run on their own in their own time.

1) How to start a race
Lead by your grade manager, once you have been placed in a lane you…
- Stand 3 feet behind the start line;
- The starter say’s “TAKE YOUR MARK” = the athlete moves up to the start line and prepares for the race with one foot behind the other;
- The starter say’s “GET SET” = the athlete prepares in starting stance;
- The starter will “CLAP” the clappers or set off the gun to go;

2) How to finish a race
- Once your athlete has crossed the finish line, (staying in their designated lane) get them to walk back and tap the line with their foot. A simple guesture of sportsmanship.
- If your athlete has achieved a placing, they will only get given the place stick if they return to the finish line to receive it.
- Have your child walk back to sit down in there area and wait till the grade manager is ready to mark down your place if you have one.

TIPS
- Remind your child to check that their foot is behind the line, not on or touching the line.
- Remind your child to go back and tap the line.
- Bring your child to the track and teach them how to follow the bend on the 200m.

3) Fair play and sportsmanship
- unfair advantage.
- Please encourage your child to encourage others.
