SENIOR CROSS COUNTRY & ROAD RUNNING

E -News 1/9/2010 [Open | Close]

Well done to everyone who participated in the Marathon Relay last Saturday when the weather behaved.

The course was well received by the athletes, thanks to John Read for setting the course. It went from the club, past Somerville Intermediate and via the beaches to Musick Point, returning to the club via Pakuranga Plaza.
Although some runners took wrong turns (by mistake or otherwise) it should be remembered this was really a fun event. This course could well be kept for another year.

The "On the Day" selected team were first to finish in just under 3 hours with team members Bruce Calway, Paul Williams, Shannon Sivewright and Leyden Tolhurst (2 legs) - ( I hope I got that right. )

First "Official" team to finish was the Red team, lead by Kristine Reid and other members Darryl Miller, Jo Hitchings, Greg Dodds and Gaye Stratton, in an approximate time of 3 hours 16.

Thanks again to John Read for organising the event.

Next Saturday - September 4th, Road Handicap at the club,  2 pm start for those off "go"
Normal courses unless you want to upgrade from the short course to the long - then please advise the starters - request a handicap if you haven't got one.
And NO - those age groups down to run the long course cannot get handicap points for running the short course.
This is the second to last handicap event for the year and some age groups are still close point's wise so lets see a bigturnout, a practice for the club champs next week.

Trophy Returns -  a message from Bev and Gaye.
Can we please have any Road trophies won last year by the 4th September as the Road Champs are on Sat 11th.
Also, can we have this year’s cross country trophies returned by next week so we can have them engraved in time to return them to you on the 11th.
Please CLEAN the cups before you return them.

Thanks Gaye and Bev.

Also on Saturday are the New Zealand Road Champs in Christchurch.
Good luck to those club members running there

Results and report from Alec Day on the :

Hutt 5 Bridges Trail Marathon – Hutt Valley – Sunday 18th July.

Starting and finishing in the grounds of the Petone Club, this out and back course starts eastward in the direction of the lower reaches of the Hutt River – about 2km away - initially road, and then along  the grassed river stop-bank until the Estuary Bridge is reached and crossed. The course then heads north - up river along stop-banks, pathways, shingle roads, and parklands until, north of Upper Hutt, the turnaround is reached at the Moonshine.  Slightly up-hill  most of the way with a fair few undulations experienced, the course is alongside the  river except for a few km - the return journe being along the same route.  This was the 3rd presentation of the event which attracted a slightly smaller field than in 2009, with 45 finishers. This was the fourth marathon to be held in the greater Wellington area since January, and  the only one not plagued with rain. The weather was cool – just over 10c with light winds, with thick mist shrouding the river valley as participants headed north early morning.  The Petone Club – which was race HQ, has some great overall facilities, which were a bonus for participants in this small, but sociable event.

ANOTHER CLUB OCTOGENARIAN:

This coming Saturday, well known club member Dave Spankie turns 80. Dave joined the Pakuranga Athletic Club in 1978 when its base was across the highway in the old Pakuranga hall. Prior to 1978, Dave ran with the Howick club for 8 years. On Tuesday morning last, the Joggers and Walkers' division paid tribute to Dave which took the form of a sumptuous morning tea provided by J&W members. Coral King, J&W secretary/treasurer, gave an outline of Dave's history and told the members of some of the world news that was headlined about the time Dave was born. Dave responded with a humorous speech which included facts about his Scottish background and his passage to NZ. We all congratulate Dave on reaching this milestone.
I warn other members that if you intend going for an hours walk with Dave you need to be very, very fit. I know from experience. Photos of the morning can be viewed on the Club web site photo gallery under the title "Another Club Octogenarian".

E - news 15/7/2010 [Open | Close]

Good Morning Everyone

Last Saturday it was the smallest team (about 30 seniors and juniors) for many years to represent
Pakuranga at the North Island Cross Country Champs but those who were there scored good points
in the Club Cup competition for the club to get 3rd overall.
The weather in Taupo was like the rest of the country - superb , fine frosty morning and very little wind,
and the underfoot conditions were very very dry (no sign of any mud)

The results were headed by a tremendous win in the Senior Mens 9,000 metre race where Alex Parlane
continued his seasons great form, his first in the senior grade. Alex led from the start and continued to
increase his lead over each of the 3 laps to finish in 28:18, nearly 1 minute ahead of 2nd placed
James Coubrough of Wellington Scottish.
In the Masters Womens race of 5,000 metres, Kristine Reid was 5th overall and 2nd in the 40-44 age group
in a time of 19:55.
Other senior and masters results were
Penny Peskett    Senior Women  5,000m  7th    18:52
Natalie Seay       Masters Women 40-44  5,000m  6th    23:09
James Hand       Senior Men  9,000m  15th    31:38
Glenn Paterson  Masters Men 40-44  6,000m  4th    21:33

In the junior grades Jessica Croy won the Girls 10 grade in 3:53 for the 1,000 metres.

Full results are posted on Taupo Harriers website www.taupoharriers.com

On Sunday, also in Taupo was the Brookes Off Road Half Marathon.
This course was on Mount Tauhara behind Taupo and had a great 3 k or so climb at the 17 k mark.
The weather was the same as the previous day.
Kristine Reid backed up her Saturday run at the NICC with a win in the womens 40-49 grade with a time of 1:41:02
(17th overall and 2nd woman.)
Steve Williamson was 6th Men 50-59 in 1:50:07 (49th overall and 42 man) and John Read is back with 7th in

My name is Daniel Lambert and I am a Fitness Consultant at the Lynfield Recreation and Youth Centre.
On the 28th August I will be holding a Strongman Competition at the Lynfield Recreation and Youth Centre - Lynfields Strongest Man. There will be 2 divisions - Novice and Opens, and 4 events - Log-Lift, Truck Pull, 60kg One-Arm Dumbbell Clean and Press and 250kg Tyre Flip.

All new and existing Meridian Energy users can now choose to have their account affiliated with a specific sport (Bowls, Swimming, Softball, Bike etc) and Meridian will then donate $15 to that sport.
Athletics New Zealand (ANZ) is one of the partnered sports and ANZ is encouraging you to choose ANZ as your affiliated sport.  Your chosen club will receive $5 a year and ANZ will receive $10 a year to be spent on development programmes to benefit members.
This will apply while you are a Meridian customer (the campaign runs until the end of 2012).

Based on the different rates charged by each energy provider it may not be worth the $15 donation for people to change to Meridian, in some cases you'd just be better staying with your current provider and donating $15 to the club and ANZ yourself, but with winter here it's always worth a check to see who has the best deal,
and if it's Meridian then the club and ANZ can get some cash too.

HEB X country results [Open | Close]

Results from the HEB XC races on Saturday attached (posted on the AAI website www.athleticsauckland.co.nz) .  Also attached below revised race distances, which due to a wee technical hitch with the Papakura measuring wheel were stated wrongly on the Entry Form.

Could you also all make sure that all athletes who registered last year and want to compete in the GP races get themselves re-registered.  If they are not registered up for this season and race with their transponder they will not show up in the results.  If however you have new athletes who have registered and not yet received their club transponder, or athletes have forgotten their transponders on race day, they need to go to the registration desk at the race venue and get a Visitor Transponder for the day at a cost of $10 with a $5 refund on return after the race.  This is extremely important from a results point of view.

Also all those athletes running Huntly Half that want to be considered for the Auckland Half Marathon Championships need to make sure they are registered before this weekend.

Cheers

An Important Security Note from the Soccer Club
Unfortunately we had a reminder last Saturday that there are many scumbags out there when one of our youth parents had his bag with wallet and car keys stolen from Lloyd Elsmore Park while he was referreeing.
To cap it off the cheeky buggars then wandered around the carparks to find and steal his car.
Please keep your valuables with you and keep an eye out for anyone that looks like they are
not there to watch the football.

And finally a tale from Tarawera -

Hi Everyone -  here is my report from Tarawera.

An ultramarathon ah. Its amazing what you commit to over a glass of wine. Yea ive done ironman a few times and walked the 100k oxfam, this should be a walk in the park. Yea right.

There was four of us in our little groups and we trained and trained and trained, but still nothing prepares you for the day.

The course starts from the Redwoods visitors centre in Rotorua, heads out to the Blue Lakes, through to Lake Okataina. Then the Tarawera falls and finally throught forestry road to Kawarau. If you ever get a chance to do this as a walk with a group, its spectacular.

The first 35kms are the hardest part of the course. Lots of up up up and single track bush crashing stuff. When we first trained on it, they hadnt cleared the course so there were  lots, and i mean a lots of blood and tears and toy tossing. By the time you get to Okataina your a bit shattered, but knowing whats ahead you push on. The next part of the race is the most beautiful. You head along the lake side, then into the forest where you encounter lots of beautiful groves. Then onto the Tarawera falls. A spectacle in themselves. The last part is mostly forestry road, but still very pleasant.

My race didnt quite go to plan, as a have a hamstring impingement, that likes to raise its ugly head every so often, especially on long distance. So at 40km it went bang. I thought if i can get to the falls and pick up Lorna (you can have a companion runner for the last 30k) i would be fine. I wasn't going down without a fight. So with a hop skip and a few swear words worked my way to the end which as actually 86km total.

It was still a really good day. The support was amazing, thanks to Lorna, Kristine and John. What are friends for. When you get to the 70km mark and they are standing there with a speights just for me, oh glory times. The aid stations were great, they had catered for $50 per person, so there was lollies, cookies, chips, power bars, gels, coke, mountain dew. Children singing and performing it was great.

Ultramarathons really test not only your physical strength, but your mental strength, and i think everyone should consider doing one in there life. As you learn quite alot of what you and your body are capable of.

So i now hang up my off road shoes and contemplate getting on my bike and training for Ironman Japan in June. The next ultramarathon, hmmmm hopefully the kepler in December and then onto the 100k ultra in the Blue Mountains next year.

Happy running everyone. Nat

Important request from David Harper

As you all know our hosting of the Athletics Auckland Grand Prix Cross Country event at Pakuranga is on May 29th. Last year's event was the last of the Macrennie sponsorship deal (and the committee thank them for their involvement).
However, we are now in need of a new sponsor or sponsors, so I am asking if any one or their business would like to get involved in this fantastic opportunity to promote themselves in front of many people through out the greater Auckland area?
Last year we had near on 400 competitors plus their families and supporters at Pakuranga

Sponsorship packages start from $250. For more information please phone me on 535 6258.
First in gets the best deals.

Jill Fosters husband has asked if we can let the club members know that she is in Ward 8 at Middlemore hospital (she has been there for 8 weeks) and if any one would like to visit her they are more than welcome.
