E - News Oct 2, 2011 [Open | Close]

Good Evening All
What a fun day of camaraderie there was at the club on Saturday when the Marathon Relay took place.
Five teams embarked on the five leg relay covering about the marathon distance and after the first 10.1 k leg
Simon Phillips led for team 1 and 3 teams were within 40 seconds of each other.
Other leg distances were , 2 and 4 were 8.3, 3 was approx 5.4 and the last another 10.1.
As the relay progressed, team 5, who only had 3 members at the start, had shot out to a comfortable lead,
they had over 5 minutes on team 2 at the last changeover. Teams 3, 1 and 4 were out of contention but
only 5 minutes separated them.
Team 2s' Mark Topliss set out firstly to reduce the deficit to team 5 on the last 10 k lap (shared by Adrian
Edge and John Read) , almost catching Adrian (who had already run leg 1) then finally catching
John (who ran leg 2) approaching the car park entrance. Mark taking the win for team 2 by 14 seconds,
exciting after 3 hours 15 minutes 38 seconds of running.
Team 2 members were Robert Glee, Allan Bradbury, Craig Williamson, Richard Thomson and Mark Topliss.
Team 5 were 2nd form 4, 3 and 1. Please note that teams 4, 3 and 1 all had a walker each and must
be congratulated for not giving up their team support.
Results by team and individual are attached. Note that some times may not be accurate by 10 -20 seconds
due to a time clock malfunction (laps 3 and 4 ?).
Next Saturday - October 8th there will again be a bit of history again on the road - this time with a difference
as the Junior Cross Country and Road section will be joining us for the run.

The New Zealand Road Relays were still the talk at the club yesterday at the Monday Night 5k
The event was very successful, and again thanks to Mike (especially) and his team of volunteers
for making this happen. The comiittee will be having a debrief meeting in the near future to
discuss what went well and where improvements can be made, as it is likely that at least
Auckland centre road relays will be held on the course in the future.
The following message was received from Brian Evison, Technical Delegate representative for Athletics NZ
New Zealand Road Relay Championships Hunua 3rd Sept 2011

As ANZ Technical Delegate to this event I have taken the time to pen this covering letter to be sent to all athletic clubs
that participated at Hunua. I have been working with the Pakuranga Club to facilitate this event for the last 18 months,
firstly for the Auckland Centre Championships 2010. With president Bob Smith’s vision and the tireless effort of
event chairman Mike Trathen together with the local organizing committee the Club did an amazing job.
They took Pakuranga Athletic Club to where NO, and I emphasise the NO, other NZ Athletic Club has ever gone before,
to organize a New Zealand Athletic Championship event. The magnitude of the effort in these economic times would only
be appreciated by the few.But I assure you all that New Zealand Athletics has benefited greatly by the Pakuranga effort.
The vision and the manner it was achieved is without precedence.
Congratulations, well done to you all. Thankyou for the experience – ‘journey’ for me.
The technical aspects will be covered in my report to ANZ.

Brian Evison

If you are at the club and havent paid this years fees - please do so urgently.

This includes that all patrons should be club members
so keeping you membership up to date is important
otherwise the club may loose its bar licence if spot checked !!
And there would be a many angry members if this happened.

Results
The 7 day weather pattern has certainly returned and gave us heaps of rain again on Friday, meaning
the ground was very wet for those brave enough to take on the Cross Country course at the club on Saturday.
As a change. everyone competed over the short course.
Note : the little pink lollypop markers on the course are there for a reason -
to get everyone to cover the same course. O O O
The ruling is that where there are 2 markers I I you go between them, where there is one I
you go only up to 1 (one) metre either side !
This was spotted not to be happening at some places on Saturday, members spotted and footmarks were proof.
Mac McKenzie handled the conditions best, being first to finish overall on handicap in 57:05 with
Jackie Russell first woman in a handicap time of 57:44.

E-News 16 June 2011 [Open | Close]

Last Saturday at Barry Curtis Park, Pakuranga won both the Senior Womens and Senior Mens
Teams Cross Country awards, in both grades the winning teams included masters runners.
To start I think the Auckland Council should be thanked for letting us run on the Park, although
at the time those that participated would probably have wished they were running somewhere
firmer, but thats cross country.
The Senior and Masters Women ran 3 laps of the 2,000 metre course churned up a bit by the
men runing the race before them.
Rachel Penney won the race overall and the Masters Women 35 grade with a time of 25:06,
nearly 20 seconds ahead of 2nd overall and Senior Woman winner Rachael Kingstone from ACA.
Robyn Young was 3rd overall in 25:37 to place 2nd in the Senior Women. Other grade placings
were Leah Hirschfeld, 3rd overall and 2nd MW35 in 26:23. Kristine Reid, 4th overall and 1st MW40 in 26:51.
Melanie Cossar 1st MW45 in 27:49 and Natalie Seay 3rd MW40 in 31:49.
No teams results have been posted on the Auckland website but I think the Masters Women team would
have won that grade too.
Senior and Masters Men ran 5 laps of the course which started in good condition but soon churned up
and became slippery by the end.
Senior Mens race was won by Stephen Lett (Takapuna) in 35:19 with Alex Parlane 2nd in a time of 35:38.
Nick Pannett was 4th in 37:34 and Brett Henley 5th in 37:50.
Masters Men placings were John Read 2nd in MM50 in 45:17 and Chris Keith 3rd in 46:32,
David Harper 3rd in MM55 in 46:06 and John Robinson 2nd in MM60 in 50:04
Full individual results only at the moment on Auckland Athletics website www.athleticsauckland.co.nz
A corrrrection from last week where I reported Sarah Devoys' Auckland Marathon Champs time
incorrectly, it should have been 3:10:18, sorry Sarah.
On Sunday the Auckland Xterra trail running series continued at Shakespear Regional Park
with Leah Hirschfeld 2nd woman on the super long course in 1:43:49.
Nick Hirschfeld won the mens race over the same course in 1:21:16 and
Simon Phillips won the M40-49 grade in 1:33:20.
Selections:
Dale Warrander has been selected in the Athletics New Zealand team to run the Oceania Marathon champs
at the Gold Coast marathon on 3rd July
Billy Crayford, succonded to the NZ Road Relays committee from AUT Sport, has been selected to
represent NZ in High Jump at the World University games in Shenzen, China in August.

Dave Hamilton achieves 200 [Open | Close]

David Hamilton achieves 200 finishes

David Hamilton (Pakuranga Athletic Club) completed his 200th Marathon at the Great Forest (off-road) Marathon at Waitarere Beach - near Levin, in April, and thus became only the 5th NZ athlete known to have achieved this number.

David started running competitively in 1976, and joined the Pakuranga Club in 1984, by which time he had completed several marathons, with his first being the Fletcher Challenge Rotorua event in April 1979. He subsequently achieved his 100th finish at the (the first and only!) Huntly marathon in May 1999.  This latter event – a departure from the usual half, was presented that year as a result of the cancellation - a few weeks earlier, of the Rotorua marathon, due to the heavy rains which flooded the course.

His 150th finish was achieved at the Buller Gorge Marathon in February 2008.

During his long running/walking career, David has been a very active participant in a wide range of athletic events. Apart from marathons, he has regularly competed in half marathons, 10km, cross country, and in Auckland and National road relays championships. For several years he also ran ultra marathons. He was a member of the very successful Pakuranga over 50’s team in the National Road relays, which won the national title for that age group for 4 years in the mid 1990’s. There will have been few weekends over the years when David was not participating – either at his Club, or in an outside event. He has gained many age group and other merit placings over the years.

Apart from regular Club competitions, and outside cross country and shorter distance road events, David has achieved an astonishing number of competitive finishes -  25 ultra-marathons, 200 marathons – and in the order of 290 half marathons ! The sheer volume and variety of events that he has participated in over the years, and the successes he has had, places David as one the Pakuranga Club’s greatest achievers

Joggers and Walkers Bra Collection
On behalf of the Girl Guides Association (N.Z.), Joggers and Walkers are again this year asking club members to donate their unwanted bras. A sealed box for donations is down the kitchen end of the clubrooms.
The plan is to beat the Australian record which was set a few years ago for a Bra Chain.
After being counted, donations are sent to a depot in Northland , where they are packed for shipping overseas to women in poorer countries. The current NZ total stands at 148,000.
To better the Australian record, a total of 167,000 is needed by 12th November.

HEB Grand Prix Cross Country
Held last Saturday at Pukekohe A & P showgrounds - fine weather and firm under foot except a couple of softer and soggy spots.

Ode to young seniors – by Jackie

You run like the wind - I think you are cool,
And isn’t it awesome you’re no longer in school.
At Pakuranga Athletic be the best that you can,
Become a speedy and considerate young woman or man.
Please put up your hand when there’s work to be done,
Don’t think someone else will do it – like your dad or your mum.
And a kind word of thanks will go a long way,
To opening the club cheque book when you need us to pay.
So be a good sport, be part of the team,
Now you’re a grown up, you know what I mean.

Coming Up Next Monday ---- Monday Night Pakuranga 5 k
The last for this season.    As this will be Bruce Hughson's last 5 k as coordinator PLEASE come and run or walk - to say thanks to Bruce for the 4 years in Monday nights he has given us.

Yes!

The Last Monday 5k will be April 18th with 2x  Major Spot Prizes of $200 Brooks Shoes Vouchers to give away.

This season of the 5k is to be Event Coordinator Bruce Hughson's last in this position.

Bruce has done a wonderful job coordinating the 5 k fun run and walk since taking over from Bruce Calway.

We thank Bruce for the work he has put into the event over the last 4 years.

This does mean that the club is looking for a volunteer to replace Bruce as Coordinator.

If you maybe interested in taking on this role, please contact Bruce or 09-537-1677, or 027-681-3003 (and your name does not have to be Bruce)

You can be a club member or a family member of a club member.

The Monday Night 5 K Fun Run and Walk is an important event for the club, not only as an event, but also financially to the three sections that help run it. Junior Cross Country and Road, Senior Cross Country and Road and Junior Track and Field.

Without this event other fundraising activities would be required to replace it.

The 5 k seasons are September to December (15 weeks) and February to April ( 11 weeks)

The coordinators role is not onerous, as there is a network of people in place that do the bulk of the work.

The key part of the role is to head the event on the night, and ensure that the event runs well.

Bruce will be available to support you in the initial stages.

Bar Roster

The latest Bar roster is attached - if you have volunteered please check to see when you are on Bar Duty,

If you didn't - check it anyway -just in case -

If you are interested in helping on the bar - see Matt on Saturday to put or name forward for next roster

Hi Everyone

Firstly, a follow up on our fundraising for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal which was held on Opening Day. A big thank you to the generous hearted runners that participated in the event.
$336 was banked, which included the raffle money and a donation from a club member’s neighbour.

Last Saturday Morning at the club, the Club Half Marathon Championships were held.
The questionable weather did not deter the usual number of members from taking part.
The occasional light rain shower (drizzle really I guess) with a brisk wind from the northeast giving competitiors head and tail winds on the course.

First to finish overall was John Read in a time of 1:31:58 to take the Masters' Men 50 title.
Second overall and First woman was Rachel Penny in a time of 1:36:24 and took the Masters' Women title.
First club Walker was Sunnette Kennard in a time of 2:52:48, winning the Womens' Walker title.

Champion Grade Result Summary:

Senior Women          Kathleen Payne    2:04:18
Masters Women        Rachel Penny    1:36:24
Walker Women         Sunnette Kennard    2:52:48

Masters Men             Lachlan Maclean    2:00:15
Masters Men 50        John Read    1:31:58
Masters Men 60        Alan Shadbolt    1:49:38
Masters Men 70+      Barry Weston    2:08:45
